A Word Many People Don’t Understand
If you’ve ever talked to someone about salvation, you’ve probably heard this:
👉 “I need to get my life right first.”
👉 “I need to stop doing some things before I come to God.”
That idea sounds reasonable…
But is it true?
👉 What does the Bible actually mean by repentance?
What Does “Repentance” Mean?
The word repentance simply means:
👉 A change of mind
Specifically:
- A change of mind about sin
- A change of mind about yourself
- A change of mind about Jesus Christ
📖 What the Bible Says
“Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.”
— Acts 20:21
Repentance and faith go together.
👉 You turn to God
👉 You trust in Christ
What Repentance Is NOT
Let’s clear up some confusion.
🚫 Repentance is NOT:
- Cleaning up your life first
- Quitting every sin before coming to God
- Becoming “good enough”
- Fixing yourself
👉 If that were true…
No one could be saved.
💡 Think About This
If you could fix your life first…
👉 Why would you need a Savior?
📖 Salvation Is Not Earned
“For by grace are ye saved through faith… not of works…”
— Ephesians 2:8–9
You don’t come to God because you’re clean.
👉 You come to God to be made clean
✅ What Repentance IS
Repentance is when a person realizes:
- “I am a sinner”
- “I cannot save myself”
- “I need Jesus Christ”
👉 That change of mind leads to faith.
🔥 A Simple Way to Understand It
Repentance is like turning around.
You were:
👉 Going your own way
Now you:
👉 Turn toward God
The Bible gives a clear picture of this:
“And how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;”
— 1 Thessalonians 1:9
That’s repentance in action.
👉 A turning from what you trusted…
👉 To the One who can save you
👉 They didn’t clean themselves up first—they turned to God, and God began to clean them up through His Word.
📖 Jesus Said This
“I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
— Luke 5:32
Jesus didn’t come for people who think they’re fine…
👉 He came for those who know they are not.
❓ Do You Have to Change Your Life First?
👉 No.
You come to Christ as you are.
But here’s the truth:
👉 When you truly come to Christ…
👉 your life WILL begin to change
🔥 Important Balance
- You are not saved BY changing your life
- But once saved… your life will change
📖 What Happens After Salvation
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
God does the changing.
👉 Not you trying harder
👉 Not you fixing yourself
🙌 Why This Matters
Many people are not saved today because they believe:
👉 “I’m not ready yet.”
But the truth is:
👉 You will never be ready on your own
🎯 The Invitation
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
— Romans 10:13
You don’t clean yourself up first.
👉 You come to Him… and He changes you.
🔥 Final Thought
Repentance is not about becoming perfect…
👉 It’s about recognizing you’re not.
🙏 A Question for You
Have you been trying to fix your life first…
👉 Instead of coming to Christ?
